Volunteering

What is the Volunteer Support Project?

The Volunteer Project supports individuals who are interested in health or social services in the Bradford District. Volunteers can take part in a wide range of activities that contribute towards improving those services. Voluntary tasks may be within the BACC office or out in the community. Volunteering can be ongoing or participation in a single event or task.

What’s in it for me?

You will get real work experience by taking part in valuable community work.

You will learn how groups and individuals can play a part in improving services.

You will find out about different community organisations and groups.

You will develop your skills through training.

What might I do?

Past volunteer tasks have included:

  • Helping learners on BACC’s training course
  • Attending planning and consultation meetings
  • Administrative work in the BACC office.
  • Setting up an event to see how health related agencies can better meet the needs of asylum seeking communities.
  • Planning and preparing for BACC / community events
  • Taking minutes for a forum for visually impaired people
  • Writing articles for BACC’s Newsletter and helping with it’s production.
  • Attending community forums

Currently we have volunteers working in the following areas:

  • Editing the audio version of the Newsletter
  • Attending Patient and Public Involvement Forums
  • Making a video for people with learning disabilities about making choices.
  • Helping to create a BSL video introduction to the work of BACC
  • Particiption in ‘Speakout’ forum for people with experience of homelessness.

We would like your ideas about what other jobs a volunteer could do.

What help will I get?

  • We will help with any access needs you may have.
  • We will give you training and hold meetings for you to talk about any issues relating to the work.
  • We will pay expenses for things like bus fares, lunch etc.

On 1 October 2008 the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) published renewed guidance on volunteering whilst on benefits. The guide makes it clear that volunteering should not affect an individual´s benefits, and explains how volunteering relates to benefits such as Jobseeker’s Allowance and Working Tax Credits.
